Aachen: the city

Aachen is your first port of call when you get to Germany on the train. It sits slap bang on the Belgian border, and as such does have a very European feel and outlook to it.

If you've been to Cologne, then Aachen could be described as a Cologne in miniature. So I suppose you could also say that Cologne is Aachen on a much bigger scale. If you've been to neither, that description is a fat lot of use so let me try to explain a little bit more about Aachen.

Yep it's Christmas: Aachen's famous Christmas market in the old town.

It's quite a big city population-wise but the middle bit is very manageable on foot. Right on top of the hill is Aachener Dom, the city's cathedral which although not as big as in Cologne is an impressive gothic temple in its own right.

Close by, in the main market place is the Rathaus. As well as being a grand old building on one side of the square, its most famous international role is as host to the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, given to citizens for outstanding contributions to the unification of Europe.

The list of recipients includes the founding fathers of the EEC and more recently US President Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. You can take a look inside and it's well worth it for the modest admission price.

The cobbled, winding streets up to the city's cathedral and Rathaus are a joy to explore. Aachen's clearly quite an affluent part of Germany, as the quality and price of goods in the windows will testify.

Down the hill is the  Elisa Fountain (Elisenbrunnen), the symbol of the spa town of Aachen, which was built in 1827

Aachen is a popular stopping point on the tourist trail and its Christmas market, spreading from the town square down the hill, is magical if packed.
